Sahasrara Chakra

The crown chakra is located at the crown of the head.  The crown chakra, or seventh chakra center is associated with the color violet or white, the element of time and space, and can be blocked by attachment.  It is symbolized by a vibrant violet lotus flower with a thousand petals and focuses on supreme existence.  The crown chakra represents infinity and is the center of consciousness.  All feelings, activities and emotions are calm and silent in this chakra.  When the seventh chakra is unblocked, it represents the guru within each of us who is self-luminescent.  It is the chakra of the Highest Spiritual Consciousness.

If yoga isn’t your thing, try meditation or just taking some time to sit in silence and listen to your intuition. Wearing purple and eating purple foods like eggplant, blackberries or grapes can help.

Ajna Chakra

The third-eye chakra is located between the brows.  The third-eye chakra, or sixth chakra center is associated with the color indigo or purple, the element of light and can be blocked by illusion.  It is symbolized by a brilliant indigo lotus flower with two petals and focuses on intuition and being able to see both the inner and outer worlds.  The energy allows us to access our inner guidance and having a balanced sixth chakra gives us the confidence to trust our intuition.  We then develop a wisdom that comes from a perspective that transcends the duality of good or evil, black or white.  When balanced, both hemispheres of the brain function in synchronicity allowing us to be both creative and logical.  When your third-eye is open, you not only see but your also understand.

If your third-eye chakra is out of balance you may experience trouble focusing, second guessing your intuition or a feeling of being lost or not knowing your purpose. Physically you may experience headaches, migraines, ear aches and problems with the endocrine glands.

Pranayama

Nadi Shodhana or Alternate Nostril in Padmasana or Half Lotus (rubbing the hands and placing them over the eyes)

Speak Your Truth with the Vishuddha Chakra – Part 1

The throat chakra is located at the throat.  The throat chakra, or fifth chakra center is associated with the color blue, the element of ether or Space and can be blocked by lies.  It is symbolized by a brilliant blue lotus flower with sixteen petals and focuses on communication and truth.  The throat chakra empowers you to stand up for what you believe in and seeking the truth.  Not only does this chakra aid in how and what you say, but also how you listen to others and allow them to speak their truth and feel heard.  Do you listen only to find a break when someone else is talking so you can speak your mind or do you listen intently trying to truly hear the other person and understand what he or she is saying?

An imbalance in the throat chakra can manifest itself physically in the body as neck and shoulder pain, sore throats, thyroid issues, hearing impairment, and jaw issues. If you find that you struggle to communicate, tell the truth or speak up for yourself you may need to balance your throat chakra.

Pranayama

Bhramari or Bee’s Breath

Yoga

Yoga poses that balance the Vishuddha chakra tend to awaken the throat with strengthening, stretching and twisting.  Chanting during your practice and audible or ujjyi pranayama can be beneficial as well.  The throat chakra is linked to the throat, neck, cervical spine and ears.  Poses that focus on these areas help to balance the fifth chakra center.

Heal Your Heart – Anahata Chakra Part 3

When we think of love we often think of the love we give to others. The most important love we give is actually to ourselves. Unfortunately, this can also be the most difficult love to cultivate. During class I often ask students to think about how we talk to ourselves. When we look in the mirror, what does that inner voice say? Do we emphasize the things that we love about ourselves or do we pick ourselves apart? When we make a mistake, how do we respond? Are we forgiving or do we beat ourselves up over a simple mistake? Now think about when a friend asks you about their appearance or when they come to you for advice. When you speak to them does it sound the same way as your inner voice speaks to you? If the answer is no, why is that? Are you harder on yourself? We should be the most important person in our lives, our own best friend, yet we tend to speak to ourselves as if we are enemies. That inner voice can be a constant saboteur. Next time that inner voice starts to say anything to that doesn’t come from a place or love, stop it in its tracks. Say to yourself, I love you and mean it. Then think of three things that are great about you. It can be physical attributes, qualities you have or things you do well, whatever you need to hear at that moment. In the words of Rupaul, “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love someone else? Can I get an Amen!”
